Gabrielle Emanuel

Please join me in welcoming Gabrielle Emanuel, our new global health correspondent.

Gabrielle comes to us from WBUR, where she was a senior health and science reporter and where she produced award-winning accountability reporting on Massachusetts' faltering shelter system for homeless families. Many of these families were new arrivals from Haiti and in a series of stories, Gabrielle profiled the impossible circumstances and challenges they faced as they navigated their new lives in the U.S.

Prior to WBUR, Gabrielle spent several years as a reporter at GBH and worked with the NPR Ed team as a reporting fellow. In fact, her new role as a network correspondent is a homecoming – Gabrielle got her start in journalism with our Kroc Fellowship. (She was on the verge of becoming a professional woodworker – handicraft is key to all!)

Before Stacey Foxwell snapped her up into the NPR family (thank you Stacey!), Gabrielle worked overseas researching discrimination against women with HIV in Bamako, Mali; microfinance in Lucknow; and the impact of kids leaving school to care for sick relatives in Kampala, Uganda.

Gabrielle has a BA in history from Dartmouth, where she focused on Native American integration policy,  and a PH.D. in social policy from Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar.

Gabrielle starts today and will be working at HQ in DC this week, just in time for our science desk fly-in.  After that, she will be working remotely from her home outside Boston, where she continues the NPR global health correspondent tradition of living on a small farm with goats.

Welcome Gabrielle! We are thrilled to be working with you.
